Horse-Drawn Carriage, Sedan Chair and Cloth Shoes

In ancient China, the most important vehicle was the horse-drawn carriage. The initial vehicle were driven by manpower, which were called jinricksha. Later, people began to use cattle and horses to pull the carriage. As for vehicles, they were used for ancient aristocrats to travel and battle. However, the oxcarts were generally used for loading goods. In ancient China, horse-drawn carriages and oxcarts were very essential vehicles.

The sedan chair can be regarded as the unique vehicle of China. It mainly has the virtue of lifting with shoulders and hands. As for its kind, the sedan chair can be classified into three types: sedan chair for officials, the civilian and weddings. According to purposes, the sedan chair has two types: one is for mountain roads, the other for flat roads. As far as the materials were concerned, there are three kinds, i.e. bamboo, wood and rattan.

Actually, most ancients couldn't afford to have a seat on horse-drawn carriages or in sedan chairs, therefore they usually walked by themselves in their cloth shoes. Cloth shoes were elaborately made. The soles of the shoes are made up of scores of layer of cloth and are completely handmade. During the course of making shoes, more than 20 meters of thread and thousand stitches are used. What's more, craftsman spends two or three days to finish making cloth shoes, on feets comfortable. When people are walking or traveling among mountains, cloth shoes will be a huge help. Certainly, in current China cities, people seldom wear cloth shoes. Most people wear sneakers or leather shoes. People will take cars or trains, even the planes, rather than horse-drawn carriages, which were beyond the imagination of the ancients. These had already become common vehicles.
