Plant Resources

China has a complicated geographical environment with a variety of plants. According to statistics, there are more than 30,000 species of higher plants, accounting for one-tenth of the world total.

Among China numerous plant species, there are various pine trees, evergreen cypresses, graceful China firs, delicate, tall and straight bamboos and colorful flowers, etc.

The three world-renowned "living fossil" plants are metasequoia, gingko and Cathaya argyrophylla. They are all found in China.

Metasequoia is rare species with a long history. People used to believe metasequoia had become extinct, However, in 1940s, Chinese botanists found a metasequoia in Wan county, Szechuan province. This was a monumental discovery in international botany circles at that time.
